Here is a small selection of images I took during my 2016 winter vacation on the Spanish island Tenerife, the largest of the Canary islands a short distance from the North African Atlantic coast.
Pico del Teide…
Pico del Teide is rooted at the heart of the island and is one of the largest active volcanos in the world. Previous eruptions spread volcanic rock across the island. The coastline at Garachico’s old town near the northwestern edge of the island bears witness to that. It is littered with rocks from an eruption that mostly destroyed the municipality in the early 1700s. The rock of Garachico is an iconic landmark that you can seen off the coast. There are numerous great spots around here to take images of the sea waves breaking up against the rugged rocks and water washing into naturally formed pools.
Teide National Park…
Another attraction you don’t want to miss is the Teide National Park. At 3718 meters it is one of the tallest volcanos on earth. The landscapes around the summit are surreal with lava deposits and streams that have produced a variety of contrasting geological features with flora nestled in between. You can reach the top in a six hour hike. Or you can take the cable car and get there within minutes.
Loro Parque…
Also, you would want to visit Loro Parque (“Parrot Park”). The park was originally designed to be a sanctuary for parrots and exotic birds. Over the years it has grown to accommodate aquatic species as well as felines and apes. The park foundation strives to conserve endangered parrot species with reintroduction projects into wilderness.
Summary…
Tenerife offers great opportunities for photography due to its topographic inland features and sweeping coastlines with beaches ranging in color from yellow to black. If you want to avoid the tourist crowds the best time to visit is during shoulder seasons in spring and fall.
