Morocco is a photographer’s dream. You can experience amazing landscapes, subtle textures and dynamic street scenes. When traveling through the country you will immerse into an enduring heritage of beauty and grace that blends in with a type of rustic charm. It’s difficult to put into words – you have to experience it for yourself and collect your own impressions of Morocco.
The imperial cities Rabat, Fez, Meknes and Marrakesh are popular tourist destinations. My personal favorite is the Medina of Fez which is largely preserved in its medieval character. If you ever get a chance to visit, plan on loosing yourself in a maze-like system of criss-crossing alleys.
For enthusiasts of nature and landscapes you would not want to pass off a tour through the high Atlas mountain ranges. They separate the Mediterranean sea from the Sahara desert in the south of the country. This is where you get to see a lot of the traditional Berber culture when passing by villages and old kasbah fortresses (castles). The Dades Gorge with its winding roads through steep cliffs down to the Dades river is an experience to behold.
At the periphery of the Sahara desert you’ll find a number of permanent camps that offer overnight stays in tents. The bedouins will also offer camel outing into the dunes at sunset.
At the Atlantic coast you would want to make a stop at Essaouira. This port city offers some fantastic views of the western coast line. It also has a vibrant Medina with lots of artisan craft workshops. The coastline is seamed with the old city wall that makes for an attractive backdrop when snapping images.
The photographs below are a selection of impressions of Morocco that I captured in late spring of 2015 while touring the country in essentially a circle. The tour started in Casablanca with stop overs in Rabat, Meknes and Fez, then heading south through the Atlas to Merzouga and the Sahara. The journey continued east through Ourrzazate to the Atlantic coast. We then travelled north with stop over in Essaouira and back to Casablanca. I didn’t get to see the Mediterranean port cities. That’s for another trip in the future.
